BeautyConsumer – Minis

I love miniature versions of beauty products.  They are just too cute!  I have some mini-sized products and I take them out to look at sometimes just because they are adorable.

Mini stash!
Some of my mini beauty and non-beauty products are shown above.  Most were free samples that I diligently collect.  Others were gift with purchases or magazine freebies.  I actually purchased some of them!

BeautyConsumer - Antipodes

Like most females, I love skincare and cosmetics.  While I am no expert in beauty, I would still love to share some of my beauty-related experiences and hope that they will be useful to you.

I consciously look for natural skincare and haircare products.  I started using organic rose hip oil when I was in Australia.  That was pretty much the only skincare product I used for years.  When I returned to Malaysia, I found it very difficult to find any natural skincare products.  Now, we are really spoilt for choice.

Antipodes group photo!
Among all the brands currently out there, I love Antipodes most and have purchased two of their products consistently since 2012.  They are the Hosanna H2O Intensive Skin-Plumping Serum and the Kiwi Seed Oil Eye Cream.  Both are very moisturizing and gentle and I have absolutely no allergic reactions to them.  The Hosanna serum does exactly what it says and plumps up the skin beautifully.  The eye cream is humongous at 30ml and lasts me at least a year even with generous usage.

Antipodes Anti-Ageing Minis and Moisture Boost Minis (MYR69 each)
Last year, Antipodes introduced two mini sets – Anti-Ageing Minis and Moisture Boost Minis.  I thought it was genius and bought both sets to try.  Usually, mini sizes are more expensive than full sizes but these minis are cheaper per ml!  I haven’t tried them out yet but will open them soon.  The good news is that Antipodes did a round of re-pricing and the mini sets are now MYR69 instead of MYR79.  The bad news is that I paid MYR79 for each!

Antipodes Delight Hand and Body Cream
The full-sized Delight Hand and Body Cream was a very generous gift-with-purchase.  I haven’t used it either but will probably get around to it soon.

I am dying to try the new Worship serum but I have to finish my other serums first!

Antipodes is available in Malaysia in TNS Skinlab stores and online at

Tips on how to save when buying Antipodes:
  • Purchase the mini sets
  • Sign up as a member of TNS Skinlab and enjoy a 25% discount  on a single receipt during your birthday month
  • After purchasing any item from TNS Skinlab, complete an online survey for a MYR20 discount voucher the following month.
Update (15 July 2015)

I have been using all the Antipodes products above for a few weeks now.  So far, so good!

Antipodes Delight Hand and Body Cream

This cream is lovely and smells fruity (like grapes?).  It is quite thick but is not greasy or difficult to apply.  The cream absorbs into the skin nicely and is very moisturizing.

Repurchase:  Yes!

Moisture Boost Minis – Divine Face Oil and Vanilla Pod Hydrating Day Cream

The Divine Face Oil smells of ylang ylang.  It isn’t terribly different from most facial oils, maybe a little lighter.  The texture of the day cream is more of a lotion than a cream (to me, anyway).  I have problems with it gushing out of the tube whenever I squeeze the tube.  The cream is light, non-sticky and leaves me with glowing skin.  I use the face oil and the day cream together.

Repurchase:  Yes!

Anti-Ageing Minis – Joyous Protein-Rich Night Replenish Serum and Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream

To me, the anti-ageing minis are the night version of the moisture boost minis.  I find that they give roughly the same effect but I am not an expert.  The serum is quite fluid and easy to spread and absorb.  At first, I thought that it had a really fishy smell but I’ve become accustomed to it.  The night cream, on the other hand, smells a bit like traditional Chinese medicine.  The texture is similar to the day cream.  Overall, I find the anti-ageing minis beneficial for my skin but the smells take some getting used to.

Repurchase:  Probably, but only mini sizes because I’m not sure how long I can stand the smell for.

All Black

Anne Fontaine black blouse
Armani Jeans black cargo denim pants
This was a recent outfit of the day when I went to Suria KLCC and Avenue K.  Since I would be doing some walking and a lot of shopping, I decided to wear something that had enough pockets to house my car keys, wallet and mobile phone.  My hands would then be free to rifle through racks of clothing and my shoulders would not be burdened by a bag.

I bought these Armani Jeans cargo denim pants in Johor Premium Outlets for MYR100.  I was very lucky to find them as the friendly and helpful sales assistant (the most friendly and helpful one I’ve ever met) told me that they were only marked down that day.  The pockets are deep enough to hold a wallet or a mobile phone (but not one of those phablets) and the material is thick but stretchy enough to be comfortable.

The Anne Fontaine blouse was purchased at a thrift shop for MYR50.  It is not cheap, by any means, but I wanted to try out Anne Fontaine after having read so much about her legendary shirts.  The blouse fits quite well but the sleeves are a bit too long.  People tell me that the blouse looks a bit like baju kebaya (a traditional Malay costume).

Anyway, the outfit served me well while shopping all day long!  I felt so liberated without a bag to carry!

The Secret Garden, One Utama – Fruiting Plants and Vegetables

This is the second part in The Secret Garden series.  The Secret Garden is situated on the rooftop of One Utama Shopping Centre, one of the largest shopping malls in the world.

Part 1:  Amazon Water Lilies

A fallen bottle gourd
The Secret Garden is home to a variety of fruiting plants and vegetables.  I never thought that fruiting plants could thrive and even bear fruit atop a shopping mall.  I wonder who gets to keep the produce……….

The Secret Garden, One Utama – Amazon Water Lilies

The pond housing the Amazon water lilies in The Secret Garden, One Utama
One summer afternoon, I took an elevator in a crowded shopping mall.  Up, up, up went the elevator to the rooftop.  When the doors opened, I walked into a secret garden.  Yes, a secret rooftop garden in one of the world’s largest shopping malls.

Since I took so many photographs and cannot bring myself to edit them to fit into a single post, I shall do a series on The Secret Garden.  I spent close to three hours in the garden and I could easily spend more time there!  It was beautiful, green and amazing.  Now, I find myself longing to visit the garden instead of the shopping mall!

Amazon water lily at 6.30 pm
The Secret Garden is home to some Amazon water lilies.  I was mesmerised by the enormous lily pads, the spiny leaves and most of all, the ethereal beauty of the water lilies.  I can understand why Claude Monet was so taken by water lilies that he painted countless paintings of his own water lilies (yes, I love Monet).  The Amazon water lilies are pure white but turn into a dark pink colour after they are pollinated.  They also bloom at night only.  I was able to capture the various stages of the water lily blooming as I spent so much time at the garden.  Alas, when I was at the garden, there were only two water lilies in bloom.

Purple water lilies
There were also some common purple water lilies at the garden.  They may be common but they are still lovely to look at and photograph.

I hope you have enjoyed the photographs.  I am looking forward to visit the garden again.  It provides such wonderful sights and enjoyment for urbanites like me who are unable to have their own gardens.

The Secret Garden is open to public on weekends and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Admission is free!

More information is available on One Utama’s Facebook page here.

The Banana Republic Printed Silk Dress

Banana Republic printed silk dress
Forever21 bead necklace
Fausto Zanetti nude pink peeptoes
It’s been a while since my last outfit post.  Somehow, I got caught up with shopping, shopping and more shopping (MOAR!).

Today’s dress is a printed silk dress by Banana Republic with a wrap front.  It isn’t something that I would buy.  My mother bought it when we were shopping in Las Vegas (when we still thought that shopping in America was cheaper and better than shopping in Kuala Lumpur.  Big mistake).  Actually, she bought two of the same dress and one ended up in my possession.

Mall Rat – The Curve, Mutiara Damansara

The Curve is not a mall that this mall rat usually roams around.  However, last week, I ventured to The Curve, IPC Shopping Centre and IKEA to search for gifts for a tiny tot whom I will be meeting soon (no, it’s not my tiny tot).  So, this edition of Mall Rat will have a bit of a baby theme.
Giant bunnies from Sylvanian Families
I could never tire of peering into Sylvanian Families window displays
I scoured many baby boutiques but prices were just too high for me.  My budget was around MYR50-MYR70 and the more interactive toys in those shops far exceeded my budget.  Finally, I went to Metrojaya and was pleasantly surprised to find that they had plenty of toys and offers to boot!  Oh, and the Sylvanian Families section totally made my day.

Spotlight Hari Raya Sale 2015

Spotlight really knows how to make customers want to visit them.  When the latest catalogue landed in my mailbox, I practically squealed with glee.  Spotlight is running a Hari Raya sale until 21st July 2015. You can view the latest catalogue here.  I went to do a spot of shopping at The Curve and despite my aching legs, I still stopped by at Spotlight just to look around (any buy nothing).

First, some VIP Club exclusives.  There was a 50% discount on beads and a “Buy 2 pieces and get the 3rd free” offer on craft felt.  Spotlight has some of the nicest felt I’ve seen in Kuala Lumpur but they sure don’t come cheap.  Daiso and Art Friend have some craft felt as well if you’re looking for some.

Longchamp Friends and Family Sale Kuala Lumpur 2015

Longchamp Roseau Box ballerina flats
Longchamp held a Friends and Family sale at Parkroyal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur recently.  I found out about the sale rather late.  It was quite difficult to find out about the sale as it did not pop up on the three sale websites that I visit regularly!  I wonder why.  Longchamp holds a Friends and Family sale annually with discounts advertised to be “up to 90% off”.  As usual, anything printed in Malaysia should be taken with a (hefty) pinch of salt.  A brief summary of the sale is given below followed by my personal comments.

Date:  3-4 July 2015 (Friday and Saturday)
Time:  10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Venue:  Vanda 2, Level 2, Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur
Parking:  Shoppers can get a flat rate of MYR6 at the cashier.  Parking at Parkroyal is royally expensive so the flat parking fee was most welcome and very cheap for the area.  I remember paying MYR6 per hour for parking some years ago at another sale at Parkroyal as there was no flat rate available!

Vault by Vans X Takashi Murakami at Sole What, Mid Valley Megamall

I was walking towards Daiso in Mid Valley Megamall when I spotted a very familiar smiley flower in the window of Sole What.  The window display featured items from the Vault by Vans X Takashi Murakami collection.  Of course, I had no idea that Vans was doing a collaboration with Murakami, he of Louis Vuitton collaboration fame.

How cute are the toddlers' slip -ons?  The dog is Murakami's dog, Pom.
So cool!  Wonder where it goes when Sole What changes the window display.  I would love to have it!
I would have taken a picture of the whole window display but there was a huge window pane across the window that spoiled everything.  The collection includes apparel, toddlers slip-ons, unisex adult slip-ons and skateboard decks.  Everything looks so cute!  However, I did not dare to check the prices as I think they will be sky-high.

Vans X Murakami t-shirts and canvas slip-ons
The introduction to an entertaining interview with the artist here,  states that the collection launched less than a week ago and has already sold out (in Paris, I assume)!  So if you are a die-hard Murakami fan in Kuala Lumpur, you should check out Sole What.  Vans’ website has more detailed pictures of the merchandise and an adorable commercial for the collection.

Vans X Murakami bright and colourful skateboard decks.
Happy shopping!

Mall Rat –The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley Megamall (June 2015)

Welcome to another edition of Mall Rat!  Hari Raya is approaching and most malls have transformed into miniature bazaars with kampong-inspired décor but The Gardens Mall featured mosaic motifs instead.

‘Tis also the season for frenzied shopping.  The question is, are there any good bargains to be found?  Why, of course!
